White captures the d5 pawn in an attempt to give Black an isolated queen's pawn. Black has two viable responses:

4...exd5 is the main line, replacing the captured pawn to control the center.

4...cxd4 is the Schara gambit, luring White's queen into the center in order to develop quickly with tempo on the queen.
