[edit | edit source]This is the Nimzowitch Attack of the Petrov's defense, often played if White wants to imbalance the position in the otherwise dull and symmetrical Petrov.
Usually Black takes the knight on c3 with 5...Nxc3, to compromises the White pawn structure, though if Black insists on keeping symmetry, he may also retreat the knight with 5...Nf6 instead.
