Position in Forsyth-Edwards Notation (FEN)
Moves: 1. e4 e6 2. Nc3
ECO code: C00
Parent: French defence

2. Nc3 · Queen's knight

[edit | edit source]

This move has very little independent value, as it transposes into different opening lines.

After 2...d5 this will transpose into a proper French defence. White can then play 3. d4, transposing into the Paulsen variation, or 3. Nf3, going into the Two-knights variation. 3. exd5 exd5 4. d4 is also possible, transposing into an exchange French. This is not that great for White however, since they usually want to defend the d4-pawn with c3 instead.

Black can also deviate from the French defence by playing 2...c5, transposing into the Closed Sicilian instead.
