French Defence: Advance Variation, Euwe Variation

[edit | edit source]

With 5...Bd7, Black enters the Euwe Variation.[1] This move is less committal than the main line 5...Qb6, as it allows Black to reserve the option of where to place their Queen. In some lines, Black may prefer an eventual ...Qc7, adding pressure to e5. This move also prepares Black's thematically weak light-square Bishop for a possible escape to b5 or a4.
