[edit | edit source]This is Black’s most common reply. By placing a pawn in the centre, White must react fast so as to not surrender the whole centre to Black. Moves like 2. Bg2 or 2. Nf3, continuing on with the hypermodern theme, or 2. d4, striking back in the centre, are all seen and considered viable.
